TikTok was the top app by downloads worldwide in the first quarter of 2022 – TechCrunch

TikTok is one of the fastest growing social media platforms in the world. Sensor Tower recently released its “Q1 2022: Store Intelligence Data Digest” report in which TikTok was the top app by global downloads in Q1 2022. The app surpassed 3.5 billion all-time downloads in Q1 2022. 2021, becoming only the fifth application. (and the only one not owned by Meta) to achieve this milestone.

As of the beginning of 2022, TikTok has been downloaded more than 175 million times. TikTok has surpassed 10 million downloads in the last nine quarters, while YouTube has surpassed the same threshold for eight consecutive quarters. No app has had more downloads than TikTok since early 2018, when WhatsApp had 250 million downloads worldwide, according to the report.

There’s a lot to be said for the success of TikTok and where it’s headed. The social media app is mostly dominant for its relevant trends, unique algorithm, and diverse set of communities for every niche topic. Recently, their updates include interactive plugins for ads in the feed, as well as a test on a private dislike button for comments. It also recently launched its own AR development platform, Effect House.

When examining global downloads on iPhones and iPads, the order of the top five apps has remained unchanged for the past three quarters. TikTok surpassed 70 million App Store downloads for the third time in the first quarter of 2022, driven by 11% quarter-on-quarter growth in Asia. Despite being banned in India, which has one of the largest markets for app installs in the world, the app ranked third overall in Asia. It was #1 on the App Store, but ranked #7 on Google Play in Asia.

Looking at overall US downloads, TikTok has been the top app every quarter since Q1 2021. The last app to beat TikTok was Zoom in Q4 2020. Also, since Q1 2020 2021, TikTok and YouTube have been the top two apps in the US app store every quarter. TikTok was also the number one app on Google Play for the third consecutive quarter, with a 19% year-over-year increase in installs.

The same five apps have held the top spots in Europe in each of the last four quarters. TikTok and WhatsApp were in the top two positions, while Instagram dropped one ranking from last quarter to number four. While WhatsApp has been the top app on the App Store in Europe for each of the last seven quarters, TikTok has also held onto the top spot on Google Play for the same period.

These estimates by Sensor Tower include worldwide downloads for iPhone, iPad, and Google Play from January 1 to March 31, 2022. This excludes pre-installed apps. The company only reports one-time installs, and Android estimates do not include third-party stores. Numbers represent aggregate installs of all versions of the app.
