FAANG stock plus Microsoft lost $1.4 trillion in market value during April

In another difficult Friday afternoon for the stock market, US general indices finished significantly lower.

One element that stood out during such a difficult year for tech stocks was that the FAANG group (Facebook holding company Meta Platforms Inc. FB,
Apple Inc. AAPL,
Amazon.com Inc. AMZN,
Netflix Inc. NFLX,
Google’s holding company Alphabet Inc. GOOGL

) plus Microsoft lost $1.404 billion in market capitalization during April. More data on the performance of the group below.

Index Summary
  • The April 29 Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA
    it fell 939 points (or 2.8%) to close at 32,977.21. The Dow Jones fell 4.9% during April and is now down 9.2% for 2022. (All price changes in this article exclude dividends.)

  • The S&P 500 SPX Index
    was hit harder, down 3.6% on Friday. The US benchmark fell 8.8% in April and is now down 13.3% in 2022. Among the worst performers on Friday was Amazon, which sank 14% after the company reported its first quarterly loss since 2015.

  • The Nasdaq COMP Composite Index
    fell 4.2% on Friday; its drop for the week was 3.9% and it is now down 21.2% for 2022. One of the highest profile decliners on the Nasdaq was Teladoc Health Inc. TDOC,
    which was down 42% for the week (although it was up slightly on Friday). The shares fell 40% on April 28 after the company significantly lowered its sales and earnings outlook.

  • The Nasdaq-100 NDX Index
    It fared even worse on Friday, falling 4.5%. Its one-week decline was 3.8% and it is down 21.2% this year.
