Up to 16 cores, 5GHz, and PCIe Gen 5.0 support

Intel’s upcoming 12th Gen Alder Lake-HX CPU lineup for enthusiast workstations and gaming laptops has been leaked on Videocardz. The lineup includes several SKUs aimed at the fastest laptops for content creators and gamers.

12th Gen Intel Alder Lake-HX CPU Lineup Leaks: Designed for High-End Workstations and Gaming Laptops with up to 16 Cores, 5GHz Clocks, and PCIe 5.0

The Alder Lake-HX line is Intel bringing the 12th Gen desktop dies to the laptop segment in a BGA form factor. For this purpose only, Intel will use the Alder Lake ‘C0’ die which has a total of 8 P-Core and 8 E-Core. These chips will come in the same package size as the desktop pieces, which are 45 x 37.5mm, but have been scaled down to reduce the height from 4.4mm to 2.0mm.

Since these are based on the same silicon as the desktop parts, a similar number of cores, cache sizes, and clock speeds should also be expected. An important feature is that Intel’s Alder Lake-HX CPUs will be the first PCIe Gen 5.0 platform for laptops, with a total of 48 PCIe lanes. These comprise 16 PCIe Gen 5, 20 PCIe Gen 4, and 12 PCIe Gen 3. As you might expect, these would allow for better I/O capabilities than the existing Alder Lake-H lineup which only offers 28 PCIe lanes including 16 Gen 4 and 12 gen 3

As for the other major feature of the Intel Alder Lake-HX lineup, we are looking at full overclocking support for the CPU and DDR5 memory. These will be made possible through an updated ETU (Extreme Tuning Utility), while XMP 3.0 profiles will be available on a wide range of mobility HX platforms.

Finally, let’s talk about SKUs, there are 7 in total starting with 8 cores and going up to 16 cores. There is not a single SKU that does not have E-cores enabled on the chip. What’s really interesting is that certain top-tier SKUs in each segment are ECC and vPRO compliant, while the second-tier SKUs offer full memory and unlimited core overclocking, while the rest feature limited core OC.

Now coming to the SKUs, the Intel Core i9 segment will include the i9-12950HX and i9-12900HX with a 16-core, 24-thread (8+8) design, offering boost clocks up to 5.0 GHz, cache of 30 MB and TDP figures ranging between 55W (PL1) and 157W (PL2).

The Core i7 segment is the most crowded with three SKUs including i7-12850HX, i7-12800HX, and i7-12650HX. The top i7 models come with 16 cores, but feature 25MB of cache and clocks up to 4.8GHz, while the 12650Hx is equipped with 14 cores and 20 threads (6+8) for a total of 24MB of cache. with clocks up to 4.7 GHz.

Lastly, we have the entry-level Intel Alder Lake-HX Core i5 segment which includes the 12-core (4+8) i5-12600HX and the 8-core (4+4) i5-12450HX. These CPUs feature 18MB and 12MB of cache and clocks are rated at up to 4.6/4.4GHz, respectively. The only department where these chips are lacking against the Alder Lake-H lineup is the 32-16 EU iGPU, which is similar to desktop parts. We can expect these chips to make their way into various laptops in the coming months before Computex 2022 with a formal announcement expected at Internet’s Vision Event next week.
