The World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2022 will start in a few weeks. On June 6, Apple is likely to announce tvOS 16, which will mark the next major release of Apple’s software platform for Apple TV and HomePod. Head below as we recap all the latest rumors and expectations for tvOS 16 this year, including new features, release information, and more.
When will tvOS 16 be announced?
tvOS 16 will likely be announced on June 6, during the WWDC 2022 keynote. The event will be online, though some students and developers will be able to attend the keynote in person at Apple Park.
Following the announcement, Apple will test the operating system for a few months until it becomes available to all users around September, as the company has done in recent years.
Specifically for the HomePod 16 software update, it will likely only be tested by select developers, as it has been since the company launched its line of smart speakers.
tvOS 16 Compatible Devices
Unlike iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS devices, it appears that Apple has no reason not to continue supporting existing Apple TV and HomePod products.
With that in mind, here’s what Apple TV and HomePods will possibly receive tvOS 16:
- Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)
- Apple TV 4K (1st generation)
- Apple TV Full HD (4th generation)
- HomePod mini (2020)
- Home Pod (2018)
New features with tvOS 16
While iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 rumors are centered around a revamped notification system, multitasking improvements, and health updates, tvOS 16 still feels out of reach for rumors and analysts.
After a weak tvOS 15 announcement last year, don’t be surprised if Apple keeps tvOS 16 under wraps. Other than that, 9to5Mac expect Apple to tweak the Apple Fitness+ app, improve the TV app, and add more languages Siri can understand with the HomePod 16 software update.
Last but not least, deeper integration with HomeKit would be essential for these devices as the hub of a connected home.
The 9to5Mac Take
We expect more details about tvOS 16 to emerge as we get closer to the start of WWDC 2022 on June 6.
Personally, I look forward to seeing Apple revamp the Apple TV home screen and finally add Brazilian Portuguese to the HomePod mini. Not only that, but I’d love to see Siri understanding two different languages at the same time, asking for a song in English in Portuguese, like Google Assistant does with ease.
