The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has issued an emergency recall of a baby teether due to high risk of suffocation.
Online retailer Amazon is recalling the “Mushroom Teether Toys for Newborn Babies, Toddlers, Infants, Embossed Sore Gum – BPA-Free Chew Toy”, sold on its platform from September 24, 2021.
A safety issue has been identified where the pacifier mushroom head can flip over creating a very tight suction causing a choking hazard.
There are around 40 affected products in the Republic of Ireland.
The JPAC said parents should immediately stop using the pacifiers and contact Amazon or another place of purchase for a refund.
Alerted to JPAC through the EU-wide RAPEX product safety information exchange system, this recall represents the first emergency measure notice of 2022, a safety advisory status reserved for extremely high-risk products, including those that pose a serious risk of death.
