A PC monitor with a 500 Hz refresh rate comes from Asus

A 24-inch PC monitor with the ability to refresh its image 500 times per second will be available soon, Asus and Nvidia announced Tuesday. The monitor should push desktop monitors up from the 360Hz maximum native refresh rate they see today, while also putting a mysterious new spin on an old panel technology.

Aptly named the Asus ROG Swift 500 Hz Gaming Monitor, it handles high refresh rates with a lower resolution. The 1920×1080 display takes advantage of a new version of TN (Twisted Nematic) panels called E-TN, with the “E” standing for esports. According to Asus, the E-TN panel offers “60 percent better response times than standard TN panels,” and in its own announcement, Nvidia claimed that the E-TN panel provides “maximum motion and clarity.” But neither detailed how the technology differs from regular TN.

Standard TN panels have become less common among PC monitor releases, as IPS (in-plane switching) and VA (vertical alignment) panels continue to pick up speed and are known for their stronger viewing angles, in the case of IPS, and higher contrast ratios. , in the case of VA. Those who opt for TN are willing to sacrifice some image quality in the name of speed or often lower prices. It’s not clear how much of a sacrifice E-TN may require (besides a maximum 1080p resolution) or how much of a premium it will be compared to today’s standard TN monitors.

Today, you can buy 360Hz monitors, including some that can overclock to 390Hz, but 500Hz is a new level. In Nvidia’s virtual keynote for this week’s Computex conference, Jeff Fisher, senior vice president of Nvidia’s GeForce business, said Asus’ 500Hz monitor has the “lowest latency” of any Nvidia G-powered monitor.
